Retired roofing contractor here (Colorado area). Unless solar hardware is free I find the units rarely justify the cost of installation, maintenance, and hardware, over the life time of the equipment. And don't put panels on tile roofs or they end up costing you more just in roof maintenance cost. Also if we relied on wood chips/saw dust for insulation our walls here would be over 12" thick just for the saw dust. Any moisture leaks or condensation problems and you have an excellent medium for bacteria growth, MOLD. New "environmentally" friendly just means more expensive to me.
