This is similar to the method they used to teach (and maybe still do!) the Signal Corps. It's a VERY strong joint and can be done quickly with practice. While i think this is a great joint for something in your boat, car, or trailer; as an electrician i would never employ this method--besides maybe on some directly buried cables you're about to bury again.
