For when you get going - try to keep the bottom plate of the bucket parallel to the grade you want to dig. I.e. don't use the bucket tilt to dig - use the boom and adjust tilt to get the grade you want. Goes so much faster. Also dig down by slicing several times when trenching instead of going to full depth at once. At least you remembered to wear your steel toe flip flops. Safety first !
