Mom who faced infertility opens up about her emotional journey.

About one in five couples will face challenges when trying to conceive at some point in their lives.
For many, this can be a really tough and stressful experience – but as some people will share, having patience and determination can lead to success.
Desiree and Ryan Fortin waited for many years, and eventually, they decided to try in-vitro fertilization. They prayed to God for help in getting pregnant.
Soon after the IVF treatment, they received the wonderful news that Desiree was expecting. However, the couple was unprepared for what was happening inside her.
Desiree and Ryan Fortin, who fell in love in college, have been happily married since 2009, but they faced a significant challenge – for a long time, they struggled to conceive.
Doctors found that Desiree had polycystic ovarian syndrome, hypothyroidism, and low progesterone levels, leading her and her husband to try for three long and painful years before opting for in-vitro fertilization.
Instead of receiving positive pregnancy results, Desiree kept getting her period month after month. It was an exhausting and mentally challenging process.
“It wasn’t just that I couldn’t get pregnant,” she reflected on those tough years.
It brought me more tears than I ever imagined I could cry…. I found myself lying on my bathroom floor feeling completely empty after taking countless negative pregnancy tests over and over again. I had to go through shots, bruises, and all sorts of medications because when you’re dealing with infertility and looking for fertility treatments, that’s just part of the deal. [It is] costly and draining physically, emotionally, and mentally.
So you can see why Desiree and Ryan were overjoyed when they finally learned that their first IVF treatment had been successful.
When they saw the ultrasound, they were in disbelief to find out that there were not just one but three babies developing! It turned out that the couple was expecting triplets – what a huge success!
But the challenges weren’t finished for Desiree and her family.
Even though she had finally become pregnant, doctors cautioned her that carrying all the triplets to term would be difficult.
“I was too thin, too short, and it was my first pregnancy,” she remembers being told. “However, my hope proved them wrong.”
The Fortin triplets were born in the summer of 2015. Desiree gave birth at 34 weeks and one day, through a C-section.
The couple was thrilled to welcome their babies Sawyer, Jack, and Charlize – each weighing over 5 pounds.
“I’ll always remember my delivery day. Like everything in parenthood, there were surprises. After the triplets were born, Ryan went with them to the neonatal intensive care unit while I was taken to recovery,” Desiree shared with Today.
Desiree faced some complications and bleeding, which led to emergency surgery, so she couldn’t see her beloved kids right away.
However, Ryan FaceTimed her so that the new mom could catch a glimpse of her little miracles. After spending two weeks in the NICU, all three babies were finally able to come home and begin their lives.
Settling in at home with three babies was a tremendous blessing for Ryan and Desiree.
“We feel blessed, but parenting is also a tough job filled with immense responsibilities — taking care of tiny humans. Our babies suffer from severe reflux and colic — all three of them. Establishing a routine is challenging, as is keeping your relationship strong amidst crying babies, sleepless nights, and a new schedule,” Desiree shared.
Today, the triplets are 7 years old, and the entire family seems to be doing wonderfully.
Thank you for sharing your story and your life, Desiree. I truly hope it can inspire other couples who are facing difficulties and struggling with infertility!
