My mother-in-law lived in the village, but recently she had some business in the city. She called us and asked to stay with us for a few days. Of course, we agreed – nothing unusual, a normal family situation.

It all started quite calmly. In the evening, we had dinner together, then I went to the bathroom to take a shower. My husband stayed in the room with my mother-in-law, they were chatting about something nicely. I didn’t pay any attention to it.

But when I had already turned on the water, I suddenly remembered that I had forgotten to take a clean towel from the bedroom. I had to go out. I tried to walk quietly so as not to disturb their conversation. But as soon as I approached the door, I heard voices. And then a strange feeling pierced me: my mother-in-law was speaking in a low, almost whispering voice – and she was talking about me.

– Son, did you do everything as I told you?
– Yes, Mom, – my husband answered quietly.
– And she doesn’t suspect anything?
– No, she’s not smart enough.
– Understand, this is very important for our family. You must do everything as I told you.

I froze in the doorway, clutching the towel to my chest. At first, I didn’t understand what they were talking about. It seemed to me that it was some kind of trifle or maybe I heard incorrectly. They were discussing me. My gullibility. And the worst thing – my house. It turned out that all this time my husband had been slipping me papers to sign.

I thought these were ordinary documents – some receipts, contracts, small household items. But in fact, among these papers were also property documents. My house, which I inherited from my parents and in which we were now living.

I found out that my husband’s sister had serious financial problems. And she and my mother-in-law decided that the best way out was to sell my house.

And I was not even supposed to know how exactly this would happen. It all seemed like a carefully thought-out plan, and my own husband was involved in it.

I stood motionless, listening to every word, and felt like the world was crumbling under my feet. My heart was pounding so loudly that I thought they would hear it behind the door.
