We have previously written about parents going shopping and leaving their babies in cars during hot days. Doing so is not just irresponsible but dangerous. If left too long, the child could suffer from a heatstroke, faint and possibly even die.
It happens often enough for police officers to be alarmed about the situation and keep a look out for any babies in parking lots during very hot days.
One such police officer is Jason Short from Keene, New Hampshire. He was on duty when he received a call about a baby that was left in a car alone in a Walmart parking lot on a very hot day.
But he never in his mind would have imagined what would happen next.
Jason didnât hesitate to rush to the scene as soon as he got the call about the infant.
âI got there as soon as I could,â he said in an interview with WMUR. âI donât know how fast I was going, but it was quick.â
At arrival, Jason could clearly see a baby wrapped in a blanket with its feet sticking out through the windows of the car.
It was a very hot day and Jason had no idea how long the baby had been there. He broke the window open with his baton to rescue the child.
Jason gently carried the baby out of the car but feared it might already be dead. It looked lifeless and was very pale, with a strange skin tone.
A crowd soon gathered and Jason began performing CPR. An ambulance was called to the scene.
Thatâs when Jason realized something was not quite right. He began to feel something was very off.
Thatâs when it dawned on him. What he held was in fact a lifelike doll â and not a baby at all.
The dollâs owner, Carolynne Seiffer, came back from her shopping spree to a broken car window and a crowd surrounding her USD $2,000 doll, which she calls Ainsley.
âIâve been laughed at and embarrassed by all the fuss,â she told WMUR.
According to the Washington Post, Caroline owns about 40 of these lifelike dolls to help cope with the death of her son. Apparently, these very real looking dolls can work as a healing process for grief-stricken parents.
âYou canât know how people choose to deal with their losses in life,â she says.
Jason was slightly embarrassed after realizing he had rescued a doll, but says he has no regrets and more than anything, is relieved that it was not an actual baby.
âI would never assume that itâs a doll,â he told WMUR. âI would always assume that itâs a child. I would never do anything different.â
The Keene police department paid the USD $300 required to fix Carolineâs window.
This story is rather unusual but the most important thing is that no one was harmed. If you do happen to own one of these dolls, police recommend that you leave them in your carâs trunk, or carry it with you â for obvious reasons.

Bennett Kaspar-Williams, 37, from Los Angeles, welcomed their son Hudson into the world via cesarean in October 2020, with the support of their husband, Malik.
Despite Kaspar-Williams identifying as male and using he/him/his pronouns at the time (they now identify as non-binary and use both he/him/his and they/them pronouns) encountered challenges at the hospital when nurses repeatedly misgendered them, referring to them as a mother rather than a father, as per the Daily Mail.
Kaspar-Williams began his transition in 2014 after realizing he was transgender in 2011. The couple made the decision to start a family and carefully considered their options â knowing it would require Bennett to pause the testosterone therapy he had been on for years so his ovaries could resume functioning.
Although Bennett had undergone top surgery, he hadnât had any procedures on his lower body. After thoughtful reflection, he felt at peace with the idea of carrying a child himself.
Once they began trying, Bennett became pregnant naturally not long after.
âWe had only been trying a short while, so we expected the process to take longer than it did,â said Bennett.
Disheartened by medical staff
âThis was just about a week before we went into lockdown here in March 2020, so my high spirits were pretty quickly replaced by anxiety around the pandemic and how I would keep myself and my baby safe.â
The journey of pregnancy and childbirth was simultaneously fulfilling and challenging for Kaspar-Williams, who found himself disheartened by medical staff assuming his gender and mislabeling him as a mother.
âThe only thing that made me dysphoric about my pregnancy was the misgendering that happened to me when I was getting medical care for my pregnancy,â he said.
Although Kaspar-Williams specified their gender on medical forms, the nursing staff continued to misgender them during interactions. Following Hudsonâs birth, Kaspar-Williams has actively advocated for the recognition that childbirth is no longer necessarily tied to gender identity.
Hard to escape
Expressing his distress over being consistently misgendered during childbirth, Kaspar-Williams highlighted the importance of disconnecting womanhood from motherhood. He shared his thoughts with the New York Post, commenting on the discomfort he felt when repeatedly addressed as âmomâ despite marking âmaleâ on medical paperwork.
âThe business of pregnancy â and yes, I say business, because the entire institution of pregnancy care in America is centred around selling this concept of âmotherhoodâ â is so intertwined with gender that it was hard to escape being misgendered,â Bennett says.
âNo one can ever really know whether having children is possible until you try â being born with a uterus doesnât make conceiving or carrying a certainty,â the father said of their parenthood journey.
âThatâs why itâs so important that we stop defining âwomanhoodâ in terms of âmotherhood,â because itâs a false equivalency that all women can become mothers, that all mothers carry their children, or that all people who carry children are mothers.â
